About Accuplacer Test

  • The College Board’s Accuplacer test is a computer-based placement test that assesses reading, writing and math skills.
  • The Accuplacer test includes reading comprehension, sentence skills, arithmetic, elementary algebra, college-level mathematics and the writing test, Writeplacer.
  • The Accuplacer test is used primarily by more than 1,000 high schools and colleges to determine a student’s needed placement.
  • Often community colleges have specific guidelines for students requiring the Accuplacer test.
  • The Accuplacer Companion paper-and-pencil tests allow for students with disabilities to take the test through its braille, large print, and audio tests.
  • The biggest benefit of the Accuplacer and Accuplacer Companion test is its ability to be scored immediately through an online scoring system and taken in remote locations. While there are normally no fees for taking the test, some institutions may charge a fee to retake the test.

Accuplacer Test Exam Pattern / Format

Arithmetic :

  • This test measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts. There are 17 questions on the Arithmetic tests divided into three types.
  • Operations with whole numbers and fractions: topics included in this category are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, recognizing equivalent fractions and mixed numbers, and estimating.
  • Operations with decimals and percents: topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. Percent problems, recognition of decimals, fraction and percent equivalencies, and problems involving estimation are also given.
  • Applications and problem solving: topics include rate, percent, and measurement problems, simple geometry problems, and distribution of a quantity into its fractional parts.

College-Level Mathematics :

  • The College-Level Math test, comprised of 20 questions measures your ability to solve problems that involve college-level mathematics concepts. There are five sections of College-Level Math questions:
  • Algebraic operations : include simplifying rational algebraic expressions, factoring, expanding polynomials, and manipulating roots and exponents.
  • Solutions of equations and inequalities: topics include the solution of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, equation systems and other algebraic equations.
  • Coordinate geometry: includes plane geometry, the coordinate plane, straight lines, conics, sets of points in the plane, and graphs of algebraic functions.
  • Applications and other algebra topics: topics include complex numbers, series and sequences, determinants, permutations and combinations, fractions and word problems.
  • The last category, functions, and trigonometry, presents questions about polynomial, algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.

Reading Comprehension :

  •  There are 20 questions of two primary types on the Reading Comprehension test.
  •  The first type consists of a reading passage followed by a question based on the text. Measures your ability to understand what you read, to identify main ideas and to make inferences.
  • The second type of question, sentence relationships, presents two sentences followed by a question about the relationship between these two sentences. You need to distinguish between direct statements and secondary or supporting ideas.

Sentence Skills:

  • There are 20 Sentence Skills questions of two types.
  • Measures your understanding of sentence structure — what makes a sentence complete and clear.
  •  Some questions deal with the logic of the sentence, others with whether or not the answer is a complete sentence and still others with the relationship between coordination and subordination.

WritePlacer (Written Essay) :

  • The WritePlacer test measures your ability to write effectively, which is critical to academic success.
  • Students will be presented with a choice of three topics from which they will select one for their essay. The essay may be typed on the computer, or it may be printed on essay paper (provided).

Elementary Algebra :

  • There are 12 questions on the Arithmetic tests divided into three types.
  • The first type involves operations and computation with positive and negative integers and rational numbers, the use of absolute and ordering.
  • The second type involves, Operations with decimals and percents: topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. Percent problems, recognition of decimals, fraction and percent equivalencies, and problems involving estimation are also given.
  • The third type of question involves Applications and problem-solving: topics include rate, percent, and measurement problems, simple geometry problems, and distribution of a quantity into its fractional parts.

ESL (English-As-A-Second Language) :

  • The ACCUPLACER ESL assesses your English skills if you have learned English as an additional language to your native or first language. The ACCUPLACER ESL is divided into five sections. You may be asked to take more than of one of these exams.

ESL Reading Skills :

  • Reading Skills test, comprised of 20 questions, measures a student’s ability to read English through the comprehension of short passages.

 ESL Language Use comprised of 20 questions,

  • Irregular verbs
  • Noun forms and pronouns
  • Modifiers and comparatives
  • Prepositions, connectives, and parallelism
  • Sentence fragments or run-on sentences

ESL – Listening comprised of 20 questions

  • Measures the ability to listen to and understand one or more people speaking in English.

Accuplacer Computer Skills

  • In addition to these academic skills, CSP i.e CSP —Computer Skills Placement was designed to assess a student’s basic computer skills competency. Each skill area consists of 10 questions that are a mix of performance-based and multiple-choice items. It tests for such computer basics as file management, word processing, and information technology.
